Currently I am finishing up a year of classes in improv comedy at the Improv Olympic Theater in Chicago. I was surprised to learn that people from all over the country move to Chicago just to study improv here. The classes have been fun, exciting, and very challenging.
Improv comedy is an art-form where actors fly by the seat of their pants to create scenes on the spot with no script. Improv Olympic is known as the mecca of “long-form” improv where each show is a series of scenes based on a single audience suggestion.
Characters and ideas emerge, diverge and intertwine organically. This has been a very worthwhile experience for me. Not only have I enjoyed exploring this art form, but I have also developed new stage skills which can be applied later in many situations, onstage and off.
The culmination of these classes is an 8-week performance where as an ensemble my class and I will perform a long-form show. Each show is sure to be a hilarious evening of spontaneous theatre, and I hope to see you there.
Show times are Sundays at 8pm, January 11th to Feb 29th, in the Del Close Theater of Improv Olympic: 3541 N. Clark (right near Wrigley Field), phone (773) 880-0199. If you plan to come, let me know so we can go out for drinks afterwards.
